Brad:
I am just starting to encode our finding aids into EAD, but have been using
WordPerfect 6.1 SGML Edition and WordPerfect 7. It took a little tweaking to
get a good logic file (references to entities, etc. must be exact), but once
I got it, it worked fine. I would suggest a lot of RAM in the computer,
especially
if using WP7.
I find that I do much of my encoding work using an ASCII text editor, a
boilerplate
template document, and cut and paste from the non EAD version of the
finding aid from
which I am converting. Sometimes I find having a "front end" that insulates
me from
the entity markup and related attributes slower and more trouble than it's
worth.
It is a labor intensive process, especially if your existing finding aids
are not as
standardized as they might be. Good luck.
