Vacancy Announcement
Assistant Curator, Special Collections


North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and nominations
for the position of Assistant Curator, Special Collections. The Special
Collections Department, consisting of 10 FTE, including graduate fellows and
assistants, is a relatively new department working to plan and build an
innovative, multi-dimensional special collections program in support of the
University's land-grant mission and the Libraries' strengths in information
technology. The Special Collections Department includes three collecting
areas--University Archives, Rare Books, and Manuscripts. Major collecting
initiatives currently underway include architecture and entomology. Dedicated
to developing the use of electronic resources to provide access to primary
source materials, the department recently
automated holdings information and now provides collection descriptions over
the Internet via the NCSU Libraries' home page.


Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Head of Special Collections, manages organization
and technical services for all archival and manuscript collections
administered by the department, including management of the department's World
Wide Web site and its Minaret database of finding aids; has some
responsibilities for collection development, including working with potential
donors of manuscript collections. Collaborates with the Head of Special
Collections and the university archivist to develop and manage a long term
plan for automation of holdings. Assists in formulating policy for the
department. Participates in library planning, serves on library-wide
committees and task forces, and is expected to be active professionally.

Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited MLS with concentration in special collections or
archival administration, or equivalent. Minimum three years of relevant
professional experience. Knowledge of applications of current and emerging
technologies as they contribute to meeting the access needs of library
clients, especially technologies as they relate to the World Wide Web.
Excellent oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal communication
skills. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Preferred: Three years professional experience in an archives or manuscript
repository; successful supervisory experience; experience with SGML, HTML,
and Minaret collection management software.

affiliation with a separately administered learning resources library and
African-American Cultural Center reading room. With a staff of 300 FTE, the
Libraries has over 2.5 million volumes in its collection, acquires more than
21,000 current serials, and has a total annual budget in excess of $17
million, with over $7 million allocated to collections.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke
University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Central University and NCSU form the Triangle Research Libraries Network, with
combined resources approaching 12 million volumes, and collections budgets
totaling more than $22 million.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience,
minimum $33,500 for this position. Librarians at NCSU have academic status
without tenure or rank. Benefits include: 26 days vacation; health insurance
(comprehensive major medical or HMO), and TIAA/CREF, state, or other
retirement options. Additional and optional dental, life, disability,
deferred compensation, and legal plans are available. Tuition waiver program
for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is available.
