Astronomy Librarian and Information Services Manager
As head of the Carnegie Observatories Library, will take the lead role in a
major modernization project that includes total reorganization and
automation. This is an active research library that serves a local staff of
approximately 20 scientists. The library has a working collection of
approximately 26,000 volumes and over 100 active periodicals subscriptions
and numerous astronomical catalogs and atlases, both printed and electronic.
The modernization program includes a reorganization of the collection,
implementation of an on- line catalog, retrospective conversion of the
existing card catalog, implementation of on-line journals and interfaces
with global scientific information services. The librarian will be
responsible for the leadership of the project, the final selection of the
software, and carrying out the changes to be made.
The long term responsibilities of the librarian include management of
library operations at the headquarters in Pasadena , CA including
acquisitions, cataloging, binding, providing assistance to local and
visiting scientists, and also maintaining a small annex library at the
Observatories' remote site in Chile. The librarian will also be responsible
for the preparation of the Observatories annual reports to the American
Astronomical Society and the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and will be
available to assist in the preparation (e.g. proof-reading) of scientific
manuscripts.
Carnegie Observatories is one of five research centers of the Carnegie
Institution of Washington. It has been, since its founding in 1902, a
world center for advanced research and training in Astronomy.
Qualifications: Required: M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school, or
its equivalent. Demonstrated experience in software system implementation
and experience in the use of PCs and or/ Unix workstations and a knowledge
of LaTex and HTML preferred. Need ability to be flexible and to demonstrate
initiative in problem-solving. Science background or interest in Astronomy
helpful.
Salary depending upon experience and qualifications. Excellent benefit
package includes 24 vacation days per year, plus 11 holidays, medical and
dental insurance and retirement plan. Relocation allowance possible.
