Head of Stacks Division in Widener Library
Access Services Department
Reporting to the Assistant Head of Access Services, the Head of Stacks is
responsible for managing the staff and operations of the Widener and Pusey
library book stacks. Responsible for planning and implementation of staff
training program, reconfiguration of class arrangements, stacks labeling
and signage, and special projects and initiatives; analysis of stacks data
for collection management and preservation purposes; , with Assistant Head
of Access Services, development of staffing and training programs across
divisional lines; coordination of divisional efforts with staff in
Circulation, Building, Binding/End-Processing, and Security Services. This
position contributes to the departmental and divisional team effort by
accomplishing related job duties as required.
The Widener and Pusey stacks contain over 3 million volumes. Operations of
the Stacks Division include shelving approximately 500,000 volumes
annually; cancelling books returned by patrons; maintaining book charge
records for 400 assigned stalls and 150 faculty studies; shifting stack
arrangements; assisting patrons in locating materials. Stacks staff
include 5 FTE (assistant head and 4 stacks coordinators) and approx. 50
student and casual staff.
Qualifications: B.A. preferred. At least three years of significant
library and supervisory experience required; stacks management and access
services experience preferred . Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet
and/or database software required. Demonstrated ability to interpret and
manipulate complex detail. Excellent written and oral communication
skills; strong analytical skills; significant organizational experience
required. Must be innovative, energetic, and flexible. Knowledge of one
or more European languages preferred. Job requires some heavy lifting of
books.
