Come join the Coast Guard team in Southeastern Connecticut! With the pending
incorporation of several training commands to form the Coast Guard's
Leadership Development Center at the Academy, this is a time of growth and
opportunity for the library and its staff. Located in Waesche Hall at the
northwest end of the campus, the Library is the Academy's primary facility for
research and study. The Library's collection consists of 140,000 books and
600 periodical subscriptions. It carries subscriptions to 7 newspapers, is a
government documents depository, and houses a small collection of A-V
materials. The Library's catalog, as well as several popular indexes, can be
accessed on-line via the Academy's web page.
Responsible for the following areas of the library: automation, cataloging,
serials control, and government documents. Provides the leadership,
expertise, and initiative to run the section. Trains, supervises and assists
Director in the evaluation of staff assigned to the section( currently 1
professional, 1 technician, volunteers and work study students). Prepares
administrative reports, maintains statistics etc. Plans for, implements, and
maintains (including troubleshooting problems) all computer applications
within the Library, including the library's Dynix system and all staff and
public computers (The library is currently migrating from Macintosh machines
to computers running Windows NT). Acts ad Web Master for the library's web
page. The automation librarian is the library's expert in library automation,
and as such is required to maintain currency in this area. Future projects
include automating the government documents section and migrating from the
current Dynix system. Serves on library and Academy committees as
appropriate. May participate in reference and instruction as time permits.
1. Knowledge of the organization, protocols and software of library management
systems gained by direct work with library automated systems, such as Dynix.
2. Knowledge of the organization, protocols and software of computer usage in
libraries gained by direct work with desktop computer hardware and software
including experience with the Internet, the WWW, including the construction
and maintenance of library Webs, and CD-ROM applications
3. Knowledge of the applicable principles and practices of library/information
science, in the areas of cataloging, serials control and government
4. Good communication skills a must!
