Vacancy Announcement
Head, Collection Access and Delivery Services Department
(formerly Access Services Department)
The North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Head, Collection Access and Delivery Services
Department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to
reconceptualize a traditionally organized access services department to meet
new paradigms of collection access and user support in a mixed print and
electronic environment. The current department comprises two professionals
(including this position) and 29 support staff in units providing circulation,
bookstack maintenance, reserves, current periodicals and media center
functions. The reshaped department, with a staff of 4 professionals and 38
support staff, will incorporate electronic reserves and interlibrary
loan/document delivery functions and microforms materials and will provide an
enhanced menu of services supporting teaching and learning for users both on
and off campus. Photocopy and printing services will be eventually added to
this department as well. The NCSU Libraries, operating in a technologically
sophisticated environment, is aggressively pursuing development and delivery
of user-centered services which provide the broadest access to its resources
both physically and electronically . Currently the library provides
24-hour-a-day circulation, reserve and information services during fall and
spring terms.
Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Public Services, has
responsibility for developing and managing an integrated service environment
for the functions of circulation, bookstack maintenance, course reserves,
current periodicals access, interlibrary loan/document delivery, microforms,
and audiovisual service. Responsibile for policy formulation and operation of
circulation/reserve functions in the library's integrated online system.
Leads the library in defining and creating an innovative Collections Services
Initiative, which will provide space, equipment, and staff to assist patrons
in using the growing range of multimedia and other non-print materials.
Works cooperatively with the library's facilities manager and with campus
public safety office to ensure a safe and secure environment for users and
staff. Works closely with branch librarians at NC State and with colleagues
in the region and the state to improve responsiveness of circulation and
interlibrary lending services. Recommends and administers policies ensuring
fair and efficient access to materials and other library resources. Develops
departmental goals and objectives, prepares budget requests, manages
department budget allocations, and participates actively in library-wide
planning process. Is active professionally and contributes to developments
in the field of collection access and delivery.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. At least 5 years relevant professional
experience, including management responsibilities. Demonstrated excellence in
training, motivating, and supervising staff to provide highly responsive
public service. Demonstrated ability to define and manage high-volume,
complex workflows. Experience in use of integrated online library systems.
Understanding of the mission of a research university and of the changing
educational environment. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to
communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing.
Evidence of effective collaboration with faculty and students. Ability to lead
and excel in a team environment. Demonstrated record of ongoing professional
development.
Preferred: Experience in circulation and/or interlibrary loan operations.

than 21,000 current serials, and a total annual budget in excess of $17
million, with over $7 million allocated to collections.
The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
Librarians at NCSU have academic status without tenure or rank. Benefits
