SUNY-BUFFALO ENTERS 37 MILLIONTH RECORD INTO WORLDCAT
DUBLIN, Ohio, June 16, 1997--The State University of New York at Buffalo
(SUNY-Buffalo) entered the 37 millionth bibliographic record into WorldCat
(the OCLC Online Union Catalog) on June 2.
The record describes a work of fiction "The Guilty are Afraid" by James
Hadley Chase, published in 1974 by Corgi Books, London. The book is part of
the Lockwood Memorial Library*s George Kelley Paperback and Pulp Fiction
Collection, donated by SUNY-Buffalo alumnus George Kelley. The collection
contains in excess of 25,000 adventure stories, mystery and detective
stories, and science fiction titles issued in paperback, many dating back to
the 1950s. All titles in the collection, including the significant number
that require new records, are being cataloged online in WorldCat. The
Central Technical Services (CTS) unit of the University Libraries at
SUNY-Buffalo began cataloging the collection in May.
Marzenna Ostrowska, instructional support technician, Cataloging, CTS,
SUNY-Buffalo, entered the record, but she did not realize it at the time.
"I was so busy cataloging, I really did not pay any attention to the OCLC
accession numbers," said Ms. Ostrowska. "One of my colleagues said that we
were getting close to 37 million, but because of my unsuccessful attempt to
reach the 36 millionth, I was not going to try this year."
"I prepared about 10 records and transferred them into our online catalog
and went on break," she said. "After I returned to my workstation, the
supervisor told me that I*d created the 37 millionth record. I could not
believe I was that lucky. I was and still am very happy."
"Since after years of trying and of near misses we had stopped making a
formal effort to enter one of the milestone records, it was a surprise for
all of us when Marzenna entered the 37 millionth record," said John Edens,
director, CTS, SUNY-Buffalo.
CTS is responsible for acquiring and cataloging material for nearly all
areas of the University Libraries, which together contain over 2.3 million
volumes. CTS also receives and catalogs publications through the U.S., New
York State and Canadian depositories. In addition, CTS staff maintain the
BISON online catalog, including authority control. SUNY-Buffalo is a member
of the SUNY/OCLC Network.
More than 4,000 faculty work at SUNY-Buffalo, and approximately 26,000
students attend the university, which offers 93 undergraduate, 112 masters
and 98 doctoral-level programs. In 1962, the University of Buffalo merged
with the State University of New York to form SUNY-Buffalo.
As part of a project for Cornell University Library, Ithaca, New York, the
OCLC CJK RetroCon service entered the 36 millionth record into WorldCat on
Nov. 26, 1996.
