SERIALS SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Responsibilities: Provides leadership for serials services and
participates in initiatives to attain cohesive collections and
services; provides effective access to, acquisition of, and delivery
of serials in all formats, and oversees a serials service desk; may
engage in state-wide initiatives for acquiring electronic resources
through the Virtual Library of Virginia project (VIVA); maintains /
analyzes data on serial collections, prices, and use; develops plans,
priorities, and workflows; establishes documentation, procedures, and
systems specifications; ensures effective use of systems technology;
monitors vendor performance; and oversees staff training and
development. Supervises 4.5 FTE. Includes collection development
assignment and may include night and weekend hours. Reports to the
Head, Bibliographic Services.
Qualifications: MLS from an ALA accredited program; minimum 1 year
professional experience in a library or the serials industry;
experience with serials; proven supervisory, analytical,
communications, planning, and project management skills; effective
participation in team-based work; ability to manage and exercise
leadership in a changing environment; knowledge of library
acquisitions practices; experience with library systems and personal
computer applications; and commitment to professional development.
DESIRED: Experience in public services or cataloging; knowledge of a
European language; and background in collection development.
Salary and benefits: Minimum $30,000. Good benefits package.
LIBRARY: Serials is a part of the Bibliographic Services Department,
in which the unit heads of acquisitions, serials and cataloging
collaborate with the Department Head in the management of the records
of the library database, and the processing and preservation of
library materials. The Serials Services Libarian also participates in
collection development and public services programs. Overall library
staff of 22 librarians and 43 support staff serve campus community and
significant off-campus programs with collections of 700,000 volumes
and 6,500 current subscriptions. Innovative Interfaces system was
recently installed. A building expansion of 76,000 sf. is in
LOCATION: Old Dominion University, a publicly-supported urban,
research university with an enrollment of 17,400 student and 600
faculty members, is located in Norfolk, the center of Tide-water
Virginia. The area offers lively cultural life, nearby seashore or
mountain recreational activities, and a moderate climate. Norfolk
also offers close proximity to an international airport.
