Network Bulletin No. 97-31

Date: June 13, 1997

Subject: Magazines

Index term: New titles and conversion to cassette

New Magazines Offered in January 1998

After two years of work with three advisory committees and two
contractors, NLS has completed its studies of the braille and
audio magazine programs. This bulletin lists the magazines to
be offered to patrons beginning in January 1998. Network
Bulletin 97-32 describes the first steps in changing audio
magazines from flexible disc to cassette and discusses issues
related to the transition from the current to the new list
of magazines.

As you know, we had planned to introduce new audio titles
only when they could be offered on cassette. A recent
review of this decision convinced us and members of the
advisory committee for the flexible disc/cassette study
that it would be in the best interests of patrons to offer
all of the new audio titles immediately, whether on flexible
disc or cassette. New titles will thus be available to
readers two to four years earlier than originally planned.

Attachments 1, 2, and 3 list the braille, cassette, and
flexible-disc magazines, respectively, that will be offered
to program users beginning in January 1998. Annotations
are being prepared for the new titles. An annotated list
of titles will be distributed via a network bulletin within
the next few weeks.
