POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
GEOSCIENCES REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Sterling C. Evans Library at Texas A&M
University seeks a librarian to provide comprehensive reference service
initially in a general reference environment, and then as part of the
science and engineering subject cluster with emphasis on the
geosciences. As a subject specialist, will have primary responsibility for
collection development in the geoscienes. Reference subject specialist
duties will include traditional reference desk hours as well as service by
appointment for faculty and graduate students; providing bibliographic
instruction for individual classes ; creating handouts and other subject
specific informational materials on library collections; and associated
duties. Will provide outreach activities to geosciences teaching faculty.
Working closely with them to develop strong lines of communication,
assisting them in developing class assignments, and in acquiring library
materials supporting the curriculum and research. Participates in library
committees, university service, and professional activities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA accredited MLS degree program.
Academic background in geosciences required. Familiarity with
electronic resources, including those available on the Internet; ability to
work both independently and creatively in a team environment. Teaching
ability. Ability to meet promotion and tenure requirements of the
University. Effective oral, written communication, and interpersonal
skills, strong public service attitude.
Preferred: Second masters. Science reference experience and a
degree in physical or life sciences. Professional or preprofessional
library experience highly desirable. Knowledge of Geographic
Information Systems.
ENVIRONMENT: A member of ARL, Evans Library is the University's
principal research and information center providing two million volumes,
3.6 million rnicroforms, and 13,000 current journal subscriptions and over
60 databases. There is a total staff of 203, including 57 librarians with
full faculty status. Librarians work in a sophisticated online environment
utilizing NOTIS and a full range of automated information retrieval
services. A building expansion project is currently under construction.
Founded in 1876, Texas A&M University has an enrollment of 43,000 g it
the third largest university in the nation. An integral part of the twin cities
of Bryan and College Station, the University is situated less than two
hours from Houston and Austin.
BENEFITS & SALARY: Salary: Minimum $27,000 for 12 months.
Comprehensive benefit package, choice of retirement programs, no state
or local income tax. This is an academic appointment carrying full faculty
status and responsibilities including research and publication
requirements of the University.
