Is anyone else bothered by this loss of specificity? While we don't
have codes for other provinces of China, Hong Kong produces as many
English language publications as all other provinces combined.

It would not be possible to use hkc, since c in that position means
Canada. But could not some other two letter or three letter code have
been devised? The code ch is used for Taiwan, and ck for Columbia, so
a meaningful two letter code would be difficult. How about chk? Is
anyone using cc rather than th for Thailand?
