Dear American Memory Fellows:
Soon you will receive a package (by postal mail) from us with a couple of
interesting enclosures. One is the September 1997 issue of the Library of
Congress Information Bulletin with a special article on the Institute (with
pictures!)...
Also enclosed is a new product that we've developed as part of our
educational outreach program in the National Digital Library Program -- a
sample lesson on immigration called Port of Entry. It is packaged on a
diskette (both Mac and PC diskettes are enclosed), and is accessible from
your web browser. You don't have to be connected to the Internet to use it,
but it can access American Memory online if you are connected.
This product was based on the idea that Judy Graves demonstrated at the
Institute. We developed it as a demonstration project for distribution via
congressional offices and at conferences such as NCSS. We won't be offering
it for sale, and we have limited supplies at this time. However, it is
fully reproducible, both the diskettes and the booklet.
While the packaging is deluxe, the idea is simple -- a lesson built in HTML
for use on a standalone computer via a web browser. We hope the product
stimulates teachers and librarians to experiment with techniques such as
this. It's also a handy way to demonstrate a project without live
connections to the Internet.
Enjoy Port of Entry with our compliments, and let us know what you think
about its effectiveness. All of us here appreciate your efforts, and look
forward to hearing from you.
Martha
