The parasites were from another planet. Diseases which we have adapted to and
are immune for might very well be deadly to extraterrestrial life. Have you
ever read 'The War of The Worlds' by H.G. Wells, one of the top 10 most
famous works of classic SF? It kills off the Martians with the same plot
device, the invaders succumbing to a terrestrial disease to which they have
no immunity. Heinlein killed off the 'Puppet Masters' the same way.
