Hi Michael,
Try looking at 'Somewhere East of Life' by Brian Aldiss. It features a
scholar of architecture at the protagonist. He is attached to a UN
organization that serves to preserve endangered buildings (Cathedrals and
what not) throughout the world's hot spots. I've always liked Mr Aldiss's
humanity which seems to color everthing he writes---it is also a very good
read, full of ideas and insight.
Regards,
Robert
