The two implementations are different (the .ssh is a text file while the .lsi is a binary, so trying to interpret it
doesn't get you too far).
There seem two main uses for the .lsi - to give your screen a familiar layout at the time of data entry and to print.
The first soon becomes unnecessary as you get away from the WYSIWYG mentality fostered by word processors.
While I have created nearly all my EAD files in Wordperfect, I have only tried to use the .lsi approach once (when
page breaks were called for at random points in the printout). Whether or not you need an .lsi will depend upon
what is required of your printouts: in many cases if you already have an .ssh file, then you can print from Panorama
and get just as good a result.
