OCLC DIAL TCP/IP ACCESS NOW AVAILABLE
DUBLIN, Ohio, Sept. 29, 1997--OCLC Dial TCP/IP Access is now available
throughout the U.S. and in many countries around the world. Dial TCP/IP
Access uses Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to connect to OCLC services over an
ordinary phone line. It is the first in a new family of TCP/IP access
methods that OCLC is introducing.
Dial TCP/IP Access offers full-featured access to all OCLC systems and
services--from the OCLC Cataloging and Resource Sharing services to the
OCLC FirstSearch service and the OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections
Online service. This new TCP/IP Access method (and all future TCP/IP
access methods) allows users to view documentation from the OCLC Web
site during logon sessions to OCLC Cataloging or any other OCLC online
service. The introduction of Dial TCP/IP Access follows a month-long
field test program with 10 libraries.
"We tried to use as many OCLC systems as possible," said Thomas Boyle,
library director, Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, Nebraska--one of
the Dial TCP/IP Access field test sites. "We used the ILL system nearly
every day--both the interactive system and the automated Micro Enhancer.
All of these services seemed to work well under Dial TCP/IP Access. The
connection was similar to the speed of our Internet connection (56kb
line), and the response time was quick and reliable."
"With Dial TCP/IP Access, libraries will be able to reach OCLC systems
and services that were previously inaccessible using asynchronous dial
access," said Gary Houk, vice president, OCLC Services. "This is one
more way that OCLC is meeting its goal of furthering access to the
world's information."
Dial TCP/IP Access users may open multiple sessions while being billed
only a single connect-time charge. The access method makes use of the
dial-up networking features of Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.
Dial TCP/IP Access requires a PC with a Pentium microprocessor, Windows
95 or Windows NT 4.0, and a modem capable of 28.8 bps.
OCLC TCP/IP Dial Access is not available in all countries. Check with
the appropriate OCLC international division or distributor for more
information. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa, contact the OCLC
Europe office, located in Birmingham, United Kingdom, +44 121 456 4656.
In Asia and the Pacific region, contact the OCLC Asia Pacific office in
Dublin, Ohio, +1-614-764-6189. In Canada, contact the OCLC Canada
office in Montreal, Quebec, +1-514-658-6583. In Latin America and the
Caribbean, contact the OCLC Latin America and the Caribbean office in
Dublin, Ohio, +1-614-761-5196. All OCLC international divisions and
information about OCLC distributors are accessible on the OCLC Home Page
[www.oclc.org].
OCLC Online Computer Library Center is a nonprofit, membership, computer
library service and research organization whose computer network and
services link more than 25,000 libraries in 63 countries and
territories. (GP)
