The initial session will focus on the roles and responsibilities of
library staffs in serving a diverse community of users. It will suggest
knowledge, abilities, and skills that are effective for developing
leadership in a global cultural environment. It will assist library staffs
in avoiding unnecessary conflicts over cultural programming while building
access to a broader array of information resources. The role of the
library as an entry point to a global society will be emphasized. The
second session will focus more on the impact of the globalization of
information products and services, specifically how they are marketed and
sold to libraries. It will discuss threats to freedom of access to
information posed by international copyright and trade agreements. It will
also address the relationship between multicultural user communities and
the multicultural sources of information. Emphasis will be on developing
and retaining a coherent vision f library and information services in an
increasingly global environment.
