Session One: "How may I help you?"
Friday, Nov. 21, 1997
Noon to 1:45 p.m. (Eastern Time) plus one 10-minute break and a
30-minute Q and A session.
Customer service is the key. "How may I help you?" is a simple phrase, but
could be the foundation on which you build improved customer service for
your library patrons and your staff. You'll learn new strategies for
dealing with conflict resolution and difficult bosses and good ways to
remember "just why were in this business, anyway."
The Presenter: Debra Wilcox Johnson teaches, writes, and consults on
management, personnel issues, technical services, library issues, and
training of each category of library worker. Johnson works with libraries
of every type and size throughout the United States. Both her practical
approach to library issues and her ability to involve participants make
her an ideal teleconference participant. Johnsons combination of useful
information and humor creates a relaxed and information-packed training
experience.
Session Two:
The Internet: Sites for Your Workday, Sites for You
Friday, Jan. 16, 1998
Noon to 1:45 p.m. (Eastern Time) plus one 10-minute break and a 30-minute
Q and A session.
This two-part program focuses on helpful hints you can use immediately.
Part I features practical, hands-on advice and places to visit on
the Internet. Part II gives you Internet sites to help you, the library
worker, in your job, including bookmarks and Internet addresses for you to
use today!
The Presenter: D. Scott Brandt, a.k.a. "Techman," is an assistant
professor of library and information service at Purdue University. In
addition to training, teaching, and doing research, Brandt is a nationally
known presenter of workshops that apply new models of learning to training
on Internet-related topics. He is one of the organizers of the annual
Computers in Libraries conference. Visit his web site at:
http://thorplus.lib.purdue.edu/~techman/ to learn more about him, and then
join him at Soaring to Excellence.
Session Three: It Takes a Vision
Friday, March 27, 1998
Noon to 1:45 p.m. (Eastern Time) plus one 10-minute break and a 30-minute
Q and A session.
More than ever, staff are required to be creative, resourceful, and
flexible in responding to the changes in their work environment. To make
these responses successful, it takes an open mind, and, more importantly,
it takes a vision. The first part of this program explores, in an
entertaining and thought-provoking manner, the conception of vision and
uncovers the core professional and personal aspects of this vision within
our lives. The second part involves Edward Martinez and a panel of experts
discussing the educational opportunities that will help you implement your
vision.
The Presenter: Edward Martinez has been employed as the public access
librarian at El Camino College in Torrance, California since 1984. His
background includes several support staff positions and public and
community college library work in Hawaii. Martinez is editor of Library
Mosaics, the magazine for library support staff. He is nationally known as
a champion of the support staff movement.
