Hi all,
Im new to the EAD listserv so please forgive me in advance for my ignorance.
I am an Australian Archivist working with SGML and EAD for the first time
although I have been watching its development. The project now in its test
phase is an exciting one and to the best of my knowlege the first use of the
EADs in this country
I am encoding a Guide to the Records of the New Australia Co-Operative
Settlement Association held in the Mitchell Library at the State Library of
New South Wales and the Rare Books Library at the University of Sydney
Library. The Scholarly Electronic Text and Image Service (SETIS) at the
University of Sydney Library.
Under the leadership of William Lane ( a labour activist), who founded the
movement in 1892, a party of 241 left Australia on July 17 1893 and
established the settlement of New Australia, on the Tebicuary River
Paraguay. The utopian community in Paraguay eventually broke down, however
descendents of the movement remain there till this day. The movement
included many of Australia's labour leaders including politicians,
juornalists and unionist as well as writers. The records of the movement
hold great historical and research value. The materials are used frequently
The project will bring together for the first time descriptions of the
records of the Movement and will include links to digital images of records
held in both libraries. The arrangement and description of this collection
will aim to bring together a logical sequence of records held in different
institutions from a number of diverse sources.
As a proof of concept the first series described in the guide will be the
Journal of the New Australia Co-Operative Settlement Association, Sydney
1892 - July 1892. SETIS has scanned a collection of compressed tiff images
of the journal and we will make these available as part of the first phase
of this project.
???Here are my first questions???
It is my intention to link one image to one item description for all 19 of
the journals in the first series. Im a litle unsure of how to proceed with
this. Should I use the available <dao> and <daogrp> elements or can I simply
use the 'extptr' attribute within the description (I will be using the
'extptr' attribute for logos in the <eadheader>). Can anybody provide me
with a clearer explanation of the dao elements and how to proceed with them?
Has anybody else attempted a similar project bringing together records from
disparate sources for description in a 'unified' guide with a digital
collection linked to it?
I have been looking for other finding aids with digital images linked but
have found very few examples so far. Some indicate that they will eventually
proceed to this level.
Please note that any view and opinions I present on this listserv will of
course be my own and do not reflect official policy of the State Library of
NSW or the University of Sydney Library.
Thanks. Paul
