The Hispanic/Latin American Languages Team leader is a faculty
librarian in the Catalog Management Unit, Central Technical Services.
S/He reports through the Head of the Catalog Management Unit. The
University Library System is an AA/EOE aggressively committed to

General responsibilities:
The incumbent is responsible for managing the work of a
Hispanic/Latin American languages technical processing team which performs
an integrated set of tasks to acquire, receive, and catalog materials in
all formats in Spanish, Portuguese, and native Indian languages, which
are produced or published primarily in the Iberian peninsula and Latin
America. S/He provides leadership in organizing the teams work and
adjusting priorities as needed in order to accomplish the timely
acquisition, receipt and cataloging of these materials. S/He identifies
and manages appropriate outsourcing projects using vendor services,
including conducting cost studies and comparisons, and evaluating the
quality and monitoring the effectiveness and acceptability of contracted
services. S/He also is responsible for contributing to timely
bibliographic access by performing any level of cataloging necessary
including original cataloging, adaptive cataloging and difficult copy
cataloging for materials in Spanish, Portuguese and native Indian
languages. S/He participates actively in maintenance of quality and
accuracy in the OPAC by identifying problems with access points and
communicating them to appropriate department personnel, and by
contributing name and series headings through NACO. S/He works in a
collegial manner with other Team Leaders in the Catalog Management Unit
and in Technical Services to facilitate achievement of Unit and Department
goals, by developing policies and procedures, developing and conducting
training workshops, and providing language and cataloging expertise to
Department personnel as needed.
Specific duties:
1. Facilitate and participate in the work of the Hispanic/Latin American
Languages Team, including monitoring the flow of materials, monitoring
and evaluating procedures and workflow, and adjusting priorities as
needed.
2. Provide supervision and guidance for support staff team members,
including monitoring of work schedule and leave, training in job duties,
and evaluation of performance through informal means and formal means
including the annual performance review.
3. Maintain awareness of vendor supplied services relevant to Hispanic
and Latin American materials.
4. Plan, implement and manage projects, such as vendor supplied services,
development and implementation of quality control measures, and
participation in national programs for shared cataloging of Latin American
materials, as appropriate.
5. Participate in all the functions of the team as necessary, providing
assistance in resolving complex cataloging problems, interpreting and
translating bibliographic information, and resolution of problems related
to discrepancies between order records and piece in hand, as appropriate.
6. Perform all levels of cataloging in all formats, including creation of
original cataloging records, following local and national cataloging
standards and practices, and adaptive and difficult member copy cataloging
using records from a bibliographic utility.
7. Participate in the NACO program by creating name and series authority
records for contribution to the Name Authority file of the Library of
Congress, as time permits.
8. Create appropriate series authority records for the local online
database.
9. Participate in the "Enhance" program of OCLC, as time permits.
10. Keep up to date with documentation from the Library of Congress,
bibliographic utilities, vendor systems, and the local online system
11. Serve as a liaison with the Latin American bibliographer and his/her
assistant and as a resource person for library staff and faculty in areas
of expertise.
12. Serve as a resource person for Technical Services personnel to provide
language and cataloging expertise as needed to resolve problems relating
to Iberian Peninsula and Latin American materials.
13. Maintain currency of knowledge in area studies, librarianship and
information technology through reading, classes, workshops, membership in
appropriate associations and conference attendance.
14. Provide regular and special statistical reports as appropriate.
15. Undertake other special duties as assigned.
16. Participate actively in shared decision making opportunities in
Central Technical Services, ULS, and the University of Pittsburgh.
17. Make contributions to the library profession and engage in
professional development activities.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS (or recognized equivalent).
Excellent reading knowledge of Spanish. Minimum three years relevant
post-MLS experience in a large public or academic library. Thorough
knowledge of AACR2r, LCRIs, MARC format, LC classification and LCSH.
Experience working with a bibliographic utility (OCLC or RLIN).
Experience working with an automated integrated library management system.
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with
all levels of staff in a team atmosphere. Demonstrated ability to manage
projects as well as to provide leadership for groups.
Desired: reading/working knowledge of Portuguese.
Salary: $33,000 minimum. Comprehensive benefits package including 23
vacation days/year; BC/BS; TIAA-CREF/Vanguard; and tuition assistance.
