Responding to Andrew Baumann--
It is my sincere belief that reading STRARSHIP TROOPERS as a sly satire of
jingoism is giving that movie *way* too much credit. The only satire I saw
there was of the unintentional, self-parodying kind. As in, it was a bad
movie. I really get the semse that Verhoeven and company created this
cryptofascist society in earnest. Perhaps this was their clumsy attempt to
be true to the spirit of the book. Several of my friends are also of the
opinion that the movie was a kind of "Springtime for Hitler" deal, but I
don't think so, because it really wasn't very funny, or sly. Just tiresome.
It is a shame they copped out on the battle armor, especially given what they
could have done with CGI.
And finally, I myself must be horrifically jaded, because I didn't even find
any of the action sequences that special.
This flick was a major disappointment, in my book. Looking forward to
