<< I believe the show that you were referring to is _Wishbone_, which I
get on PBS. I like the show. It does a great job of introducing young
kids to myths. I hope they keep it up!
>>
<< Just saw the show in question today, and was very impressed. According
to TV Guide, the full title is Jim Henson's Storyteller. Good production
values, VERY good acting, the screenplay was fantastic. It kept true to the
myth (as fas as I could recall it) while keeping the show entertaining. The
Wishbone show is (I beleive) in syndication, not on HBO, and features a real
dog, not a puppet. Although I'm sure the success of Wishbone insured the
inclusion of a talking dog in HBO's outing.>>
This talk of Wishbone and Jim Henson got me to thinking about a movie I
loved as a kid, Jim Henson's Dark Crystal. It was a very unusual tale of
darkness and light and hopes and dreams. It tried to tell the tale of belief
in ones ability, and gosh darn it...i miss it. No doubt there are those you
can cite chapter and verse as to way this was a horrible story but for my
then juvenile taste it was well recieved. If fact back then there countless
fantasy movies that (although bad to me now) just wetted my appetite for fun
and adventure. I was a lover of mythology and chivalry and Tolkien's The
Hobbitt so any effort that was made to appeal to me was grand, even when they
fell short.
Don't quote me on this but i think in the early 80's movie companies were
producing more fantasy based movies than Science Fiction. Today the thrust
is toward Science Fiction. Is that because tastes have grown or is it that
the industry on a whole has given up on mytholgies as money-makers. Don't get
me wrong I love Science Fiction as well but two of the most appealing books I
remember reading were Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and
Alexandre' Dumas' Three Musketeers. Although I loved the mysterious Captain
Nemo, I identified with the young Da'Artangan, and his era intrigued me. It
was very near to the tales of fantasy that I read. Disney has tried to
revisit the genre with Hercules and another company is bringing out the
Knights of the Round Table( that may not be the actual title) in animation
next year. It will be interesting to see what will be the next live-action
to explore the fantasy genre.
Anyway didn't mean to ramble on. If anyone within the sound of my voice
can tell me where I can obtain a copy of Jim Henson's Dark Crystal it would
mean a great deal to me.
