Definitions1. Current federal career and career-conditional employees.
Duties:Serves as senior Library Technician with major operational
responsibilities for the Circulation Desk functions of the Pentagon
Library which supports the mission-related information requirements of
the Department of Defense military and civilian personnel at all policy
and decision levels and other authorized users in the National Capital
Region. Circulation systems and patron registration service: Responsible
for the daily operations: charging, discharging, renewing library
materials; tracking reserves; monitoring and retrieving record and
circulation databases, using established procedures and policies. Uses
judgment about exceptions to policy regarding load periods and patron
registration. Monitors reserve functions. Resolves problems in
registration, overdue materials, circulation, loans, and damage or loss
of materials surfaced by lower level technicians. Responds to customer
complaints, explaining regulations, and library policy as it relates to
Circulation functions. Refers problems that cannot be resolved through
Library management chain. Responsible for all borrowing of materials for
Pentagon Library users, preparing standard request forms or automated
requests and forwarding to the loaning institution. Under consultation
with Circulation Librarian, makes daily work assignments for other
circulation/ILL library technicians and aides, and trains all library
personnel in the circulation functions. Interacts with patrons and
explains basic searching techniques to locate materials in the public
access catalog and other electronic finding aids. Responsible for the
daily operation of the Circulation module of the Pentagon Library User
System (PLUS). The incumbent provides/monitors preparation of returned
materials for shelving by Collection maintenance contractors. Performs
other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements:
Applicant must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to
at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is
experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular
knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of
the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be
filled. This position requires a Secret security clearance.
