Campus Librarian/Head of Technical Services
(Position expanded, Search extended)

The University of the Virgin Islands Libraries invite applications and
nominations for the position of Campus Librarian/Head of Technical
Services. This position has administrative responsibility for supervising
the daily operations of the St. Thomas Campus Library, as well as
responsibility for the acquisition and organization of materials consistent
with the mission and goals of the University which serves a community with
high expectations for scholarly resources. The successful candidate will be
a creative leader, committed to exploring and implementing technological
innovations with regard to the acquisition and organization of library
materials. Will be a member of a management team that includes the Director
of Libraries and the Campus Librarian on the St. Croix Campus, a team whose
objectives are to develop and implement policies that promote access to
resources.  Will collaborate with faculty to encourage maximum
participation in the planning and budgetary process so that the economic
resources available for the acquisition of scholarly resources are deployed
to maximum advantage.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Libraries the successful appointee will manage
all staff and coordinate daily operations on the St. Thomas Campus.  Will
direct the activities of the Technical Services Department, supervising the
activities of two professional staff members who do copy cataloging and
maintain the periodicals collections and all student aides assigned to
Technical Services.  Will do original cataloging of print and electronic
materials, contributing records to OCLC and exporting records to a Dynix
environment.  The appointee is expected to keep abreast of new developments
in cataloging, technical services and information storage and retrieval and
advise the Director and other members of staff on these.  The appointee
will maintain technical services statistics, contribute to the Libraries'
Web page, serve on Library and University committees and undertake specific
projects assigned by the Director.  The appointee may also be required to
vary working hours where this is necessary for understanding and
facilitating total library operation.

Qualifications
ALA-accredited MLS; three years cataloging experience in an academic
library; expertise in AACR, LC Classification, MARC formats, OCLC,
authority control and familiarity with the Dynix automated system, web page
development and access issues.
Demonstrated management experience and administrative abilities, including
budget planning, strategic thinking and planning and personnel management.
Significant and appropriate experience with increasingly responsible
assignments.  Knowledge of scholarly communication patterns and information
technology trends.  Ability to work effectively with staff, colleagues and
faculty in a team environment.

Compensation
The salary range for this academic administrator position is $38,465 to
$53,243 for the administrative year depending upon qualifications and
experience.  Benefits include 21 working days of annual leave, 15 days of
sick leave, participation in TIAA-CREF or the Virgin Islands Government
retirement plan and a comprehensive group medical, dental and life
insurance program.

Travel & shipping
If applicable, economy jet fare to St. Thomas for the appointee and
immediate family and a shipping allowance of up to $1,250 will be paid by
The University upon presentation of receipts.

Librarian II


The University of the Virgin Islands Libraries invite applications and
nominations for the position of Librarian II, a position that spans
Technical Services, Reference Services and Systems.  The successful
candidate will be flexible, with the ability to learn new skills and
develop expertise in a variety of library tasks.  Will have the
intelligence to keep up with new ideas, jobs and responsibilities, willing
to accept the challenge of a small campus library with a more generalist
staff.  Will be a member of a management team whose objectives are to
develop and implement policies that promote access to resources.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Campus Librarian, St. Croix, the successful appointee will
work as a team with the Head of Technical Services, and the Reference and
Systems Librarians to ensure the smooth operation of the St. Croix Library.
 The appointee will be responsible for the cataloging output of this
campus, will provide reference assistance in the absence of the Campus
Librarian or other qualified staff and will assist in performing routine
systems operations. Will supervise the library specialist and student aides
assigned to Technical Services.  Will do original cataloging of print and
electronic materials, contributing records to OCLC and exporting records to
a Dynix environment.  The appointee will maintain technical services
statistics for the St. Croix Campus, contribute to the Libraries Web page,
serve on Library and University committees and undertake specific projects
assigned by the Campus Librarian.  The appointee may also be required to
vary working hours where this is necessary for understanding and

Qualifications
1.  ALA-accredited MLS

3.  Significant experience with microcomputers and relevant library
applications.
4  Two years experience in reference services in an academic library desired.
 Training will be afforded in either of areas 3 or 4 where expertise is not
developed.
Also required is the ability to work effectively with staff, colleagues and
faculty in a team environment

Compensation
The salary range for this professional staff position is $28,621 to $40,213
for the administrative year depending upon qualifications and experience.
Benefits include 21 working days of annual leave, 15 days of sick leave,
participation in TIAA-CREF or the Virgin Islands Government retirement plan
and a comprehensive group medical, dental and life insurance program.
