Work Hours: Between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Worksite Location: Central Library, 1015 North Quincy Street.
KIND OF WORK: This is a part-time para-professional position in the
Collection Development (materials selection) Unit of the Materials
Management Division located at the Central Library. The employee
provides para-professional support for the adult and juvenile Collection
Development Specialists and works as a member of the Collection
Development Team. Specific duties include: verifying bibliographic,
publisher and vendor information on the ACORN system (CARL), in
electronic databases (BIP, Vendor), and on the Internet; locating and
evaluating printed and electronic collection development lists and
review materials; preparing selection lists using vendor databases,
word processing, and online acquisitions system; utilizing MS Word to
type various documents; coordinating and tracking collection
development projects. The employee is required to establish task
priorities, meet deadlines, and work efficiently with a large and varied
workload and minimal supervision.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To be considered for this position, you
must meet minimum qualifications. Applicants who also meet desirable
qualifications will be given preference. An incomplete application form
may be cause for rejection.
MINIMUM: Two years of college education, Associate degree, or
equivalent number of credit hours, and two years of experience in
general library procedures.
SUBSTITUTION: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the
education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
DESIRABLE: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of
the following: a) experience with library collection development,
selection or acquisitions work; b) experience with bibliographic records
and bibliographic description; c) experience working with the CARL
system or other integrated library automation systems; d) experience or
training in MS Word or similar software packages; and/or e) experience
or training in searching electronic databases and the Internet.
* The salary scale (grade 5) for this position is from $12.02 per hour
(normal entrance) to $16.95 per hour (maximum). With satisfactory
performance, employees are considered for periodic (step) increases up
to the maximum of the range. The probationary period for this position
is one year.
