PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
Public Relations Coordinator
SUMMARY: Under general direction of the Coordinator of Personnel &
Administrative Services, is responsible for the planning, development,
coordinator, and promotion of library services and programs through
vigorous public relations efforts. Also, coordinates internal information,
special projects, programs and events.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Marketing,
Communications, or Journalism with two years professional experience.
Must possess ( or be able to learn thoroughly and quickly):
* considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective
public
relations, and the techniques and methods (including use of graphics)
for
producing and disseminating information; and
* knowledge of the functions and operations of the library system.
Must demonstrate the ability to:
* communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including ability to
write and
edit articles and news releases for publication, and ability to speak
effectively in public before groups;
* work well with the public, department heads, and other staff members;
* handle both routine operations and long-range planning;
* supervise, train, and evaluate support staff (if assigned); and
* keep detailed, current and accurate records.
GENERAL DUTIES:
* Promotes the use of the library to patrons, citizens, organizations,
media, and elected officials;
* Maintains regular contact with media personnel; provides interviews
(live and taped) for media;
* Generates news releases and other promotional material such as guides,
brochures, flyers, bookmarks, annual reports and is responsible for library
web page;
* Publicizes branch construction progress (including information on
construction dates, sites, and openings) to media, patrons, citizens and
staff;
* Assists in the efforts to keep staff informed through such means as
newsletters and notices;
* Coordinates system-wide [adult] programs/projects and special events;
completes (and/or coordinates) reports, questionnaires and surveys;
* Gathers data, formulates and interprets statistical studies;
* Assists with library tours, exhibits and meetings; and
* Performs other duties as required.

Librarian III
Special Collections Supervisor
SUMMARY: Under administrative direction this individual is responsible for
a variety of duties as a "working supervisor" -- including scheduling
personnel and ordering materials (particularly those materials required by
the Government Documents, Petroleum and Louisiana Collections).
REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess ALA-accredited Master of Library Science (MLS or MLIS) degree
and 3 years of professional library experience. Course work and/or
experience in special collections (e.g. Government Documents) is preferred.
Must possess (or be able to learn thoroughly and quickly) comprehensive
knowledge of:
1) professional library principles, practices & procedures;
2) public (patron) needs; library services to meet those needs;
3) standard modules of a large library's automated system;
4) library research databases, information & materials;
5) functions, facilities, operations & programs of the SML system.
Must demonstrate the ability to:
1) handle both routine operations and long-range planning;
2) work well with the public and other staff;
3) supervise, train, and evaluate support staff;
4) schedule department staff and work flow for maximum effectiveness;
5) communicate effectively, orally and in writing;
6) develop balanced collections of materials; and
7) keep detailed, current and accurate records.
GENERAL DUTIES:
* Provides assistance to patrons of all ages with answers to "reference"
questions (relating to all collections in the department) and with help in
locating materials;
* Supervises full-time and part-time staff;
* Oversees daily activities; assigns tasks; coordinates work flow;
* Uses various computer programs and databases, including CD ROMs;
* Works one weekend a month and one evening (until 9:00 p.m.) a week --
schedule may vary;
* Selects books and other materials in one or more subject areas;
* Completes surveys and questionnaires (especially those related to
government documents); and
* Performs other duties as required.
