A windows font to display USMARC diacritics??
ASCII as used in USMARC records has been extended to an 8-bit code,
thus the basic USMARC code set is 8-bit. USMARC also uses the Extended
Latin Alphabet Coded Character Set for Bibliographic Use (ANSEL),
which caters for several of the diacritic characters, and this is
commonly used in records with Latin script data content.
For the display of diacritics, USMARC uses a technique known as
nonspacing graphic characters. Nonspacing graphic characters are
always used in conjunction with other spacing graphic characters. More
than one nonspacing graphic character may be associated with one
spacing graphic character. For example, using the USMARC ANSEL coding,
the code for "a umlaut" would be HEX 62 (the lowercase a) followed by
HEX E8 (ANSEL umlaut). In displaying, the umlaut should be directly
over the "a".
Now to the point of my query, does any one out there in USMARC-L land
know of a Windows based font which can handle the ANSEL character set,
and thus successfully display diacritics if presented in this format??
It would need to successfully be able to display these nonspacing
graphics over the top of spacing characters. The default Windows font
seem to follow the PC-437 ASCII standard, and the 8-bit ASCII has a
different character set to ANSEL.
Any help or guiding knowledge would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Wes Brent
