This is one of a series of messages emanating from University of California,
San Diego Cataloging Committee discussion of proposals and discussion papers on
the agenda for MARBI at Midwinter.
OCLC's position paper on the Cataloging of Electronic Resources/97-3R revisited
articulates the ambiguity of the presence of the 007 field for computer files,
which could refer to the resource itself, an electronic version, or
accompanying material. This causes problems for duplicate detection, format
limits, etc. Has MARBI given any consideration to implementing indicators for
the 007 field as they have approved for the 856 (in 97-1)? Such indicators
would be useful for solving those problems. In addition, if the new fixed
field byte is implemented, systems could validate for the presence of both.
