Network Bulletin No. 97-70
Date: December 19, 1997
Subject: Staff, network
Index term: 1998 schedule of orientations for network
staff
NLS offers network staff a three-day orientation
program about the services it provides. This
comprehensive overview gives participants an
opportunity to meet NLS staff they frequently deal
with, to gain a deeper understanding of NLS operations
and services, and to meet colleagues from around the
network. The 1995 _Revised Standards and Guidelines
for Service_, published by the American Library
Association, supports sending appropriate staff members
who have completed at least six months on the job to an
NLS orientation.
The 1998 schedule of orientations is:
[indented text begins]
Monday, March 30 - Wednesday, April 1
Tuesday, June 2 - Thursday, June 4, plus June 5
(machine repair workshop)
Tuesday, September 22 - Thursday, September 24
Monday, November 16 - Wednesday, November 18
[indented text ends]
The basic orientation program lasts three days, and in
June an optional fourth day offers a machine repair
workshop. Participants will meet with representatives
from each of the NLS divisions, sections, and offices,
with time allotted for questions during each
presentation. Participants are expected to attend the
full two and a half days of presentations. The last
afternoon is set aside for appointments with specific
NLS staff, as needed, or for touring the Library of
Congress buildings on Capitol Hill. These appointments
and tours require at least three weeks advance notice.
To register staff members for an orientation, please
contact Devon Skeele at (202) 707-9243. She will send
a confirmation letter to your library with a schedule,
a list of local accommodations, and an appointment/tour
request form.
