Hi Michael (and others???),
I have just made an assignment that will involve the use of technology in
the investigation and in the creation of the final product/presentation. I am
going to try my hand at requiring a "reflective journal" from each student
that will include entries relating to the research and creation aspects of the
project- thinking here in terms of process as well as product. Now, I am
wondering if that is really begging the question because now the issue is how
to evaluate the journal... well, I'll keep trying.
I am still struggling with the assessment of the final product. My scheme
this time through involves showing students the results that have been
produced in previous years and ask them to rank order them and then engage
them in a discussion of what made the good ones "good" and the not-so-good
ones inferior. In the course of our conversation I am sure to bring up the
question of content and learning if the students don't raise it themselves.
The result of this process is to come up with a mutually agreed upon set of
characteristics ( a rubric of sorts) and a model or two, that will guide
students as they go about doing their work. This effort is building upon
previous and similar attempts that seems to be leading in some good
directions. I'll report on how it goes.
