Columbus Public Schools World Wide Web Page
Content Standards and Guidelines
Schools should concentrate on submitting material that reflects school
activities, mission, goals, special student projects, or aspects of the
community which they serve. Content should be meaningful. School sites
that say essentially "here's our school, here's a picture of our principal"
are common and do not contribute to the information available on the World
Wide Web.
You will be given 5 megabytes of storage space on the web server.
Content Standards
1. Keep the size of your pages small. No one wants to wait 5 minutes for
your page to load. Try to keep the load time within 30 seconds for your
home page and each succeeding page.
2. Provide enough information on your home page so the reader will know
about your location and what is available. Consider storyboarding your
information before constructing your pages.
3. Use courier 10 point for the body of the text. Save the file as
text-only in a word processor with the extension .html or .htm on DOS. You
can also use an HTML editor. The file name should not exceed 8 characters
plus the extension.
example: fthayes.html
4. Gif images should be no bigger than 20 K. 2" x 2" for a square or 1.5"
x 3" for a rectangle are good examples. Create thumbnail images that link
to larger images on separate pages. Show the amount of K for each of the
larger pictures so the reader will know the approximate load time. File
names should not exceed 8 characters plus the extension .gif.
example: fthayes.gif
5. Keep in mind the width of the page when designing the size of logos or
banners at the top of your home page. Readers will have various computer
screen sizes. If the logo is too wide they will have to scroll in order to
see all of it. 7.25 " x 2" is a nice size for logos and banners.
6. Provide new information on a regular basis (quarterly) so readers will
return. You might also want to design interactive projects, provide
curriculum and lesson plans. Student pages may not link to any other web
sites.
7. Each additional page should point back to the home page.
8. Provide and e-mail address or contact information for comments from readers.
9. Avoid publishing personal information. Restrict the child's name to only
the first name. Documents may not identify where a class or individual is
at any time. Documents may not contain objectionable material or point to
objectionable material.
10. Documents must conform to board policies and established guidelines.

Information Provider Application
Thank you for your interest in becoming a provider of information to the
Columbus Public Schools Home Page.
The success of the page largely depends on the information resources
available to the users of the service.
Providers are expected to maintain the menu area in a timely way, and to
limit information to those topics specifically relative to their school.
Specific guidelines, rights, and responsibilities for posting information
are attached.
To help you and your school display information on the CPS Home Page, we
will provide you with an appropriate area on the web server plus
documentation, training sessions, and special consultation for information
sources.
As an information provider, you will have two ways to post information on
the web server. One way enables you to send information through electronic
file transfer (ftp). The second method is to send a floppy disk with files
to the WebMaster. All Information Providers will need an electronic mail
address for communication. Those who will be transferring electronic files
to the Columbus Public Schools web server will need an Internet account
that allows you to ftp. Please include the e-mail address of each person
on this application.
An oversight committee will review and govern policy for the web site.
