NATIONAL 4-H YOUTH TECHNOLOGY CORPS
ACE members support the establishment and training of the National 4-H youth
Technology Corp. In March 1997, youth technology leaders from ten states met
at ACE members facilities for intensive information technology training. In
April 1997, the 4-H Youth Tech Corp team trained youth development leaders
from 300 communities nation-wide. Since then, this team of young information
technology leaders has been building local information technology learning
clubs in their communities. Their web site built by youth for youth, links to
learning resources that is being used nation-wide to build local youth
centered information technology efforts. Late this month, the 4-H Youth
Technology Corp will barn raise a training center that will be used to train
300 new youth development leaders from 300 new communities. Come learn how
your organization can be supportive to this effort.

CONNECTING SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES TO THE NET: UNIVERSAL SERVICE FUND
For the past six weeks, the Corporation for Schools and Libraries has been
receiving applications from schools and libraries to qualify for funds that
will help reduce the costs of establishing on-line network capacity for local
schools and libraries. ACE is helping the outreach effort to assure that
communities most in need, and most likely not to learn about the benefits of
this program, to get involved. Come learn about how your organizations
customers can be a part of the solution in getting our community schools and
libraries connected to the NET.
Mickey Ravenau, Director of Outreach for the Corporation for Schools and
Libraries.

COMPUTERS FOR SCHOOLS AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
During 1997, ACE members helped build the Internet site: Computers for
Learning (www.computers.fed.gov) which provides community schools and
nonprofit educational organizations the capacity to register their
organizations needs for computers into the "demand side" of the Computers for
Learning Web site. Since late 1997, thousands of schools and nonprofit
organizations have entered the website and registered their "wish list" of
technology equipment their school or nonprofit needs. Federal agency property
managers have been checking the Computers for Learning web site to search for
schools and nonprofit organizations that need computers that match the
equipment they are in the process of making surplus. Please advise property
managers in your agency to come learn about how to access this new initiative.

INTRANETS: WHAT FEDERAL AGENCIES ARE DOING
During 1997, ACE members demonstrated their progress they are making in using
INTRANET to strengthen communications within their agencies. Encourage
members of your organization to join us who would like to get an update on
what other agencies are doing with their INTRANETS. Dianne Gannon and John
Hood will demonstrate some of the latest developments.
FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY INNOVATIONS: TIIAP GRANTS
ACE members from communities across the nation have recently prepared and
submitted proposals to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Telecommunications
and Information Infrastructure Assistance Program (TIIAP) to get financial
support for improving the quality of and access to community based services.
TIIAP is currently seeking individuals recruiting individual to serve as
reviewers of these project proposals. Members of the TIIAP team will discuss
how you can get involved as a reviewer or as a future applicant for funding in
your community. Visit Web site at: www.ntia.doc.gov/
21ST CENTURY LEARNING CENTERS
U.S. Department of Education's 21st Century Learning Center Grant Program is
just closing its application window (3/9/98). Hundreds of exciting proposals
for innovative approaches are being received from community groups that have
built community technology teams and plans. Members of ED's team that is
leading this initiative will share their vision for the is program in 1998.
