I have been working on a project lately examining how speculative fiction
addresses environmental issues. I think that this has been discussed
before, but have been unable to discover it in the archives. I am
interested in critical analysis as well as fiction. Any suggestions, and
debate, is much appreciated.
One person I have contacted said that speculative fiction deals very little
with such issues, but that the worlds created - post-apocalyptic, polluted,
verdant, or alive - may comment environmentally. I think this view somewhat
limited. I have seen not only people concerned with the environment, but
the environment itself with a voice. In speculative fiction, the world (if
well written) is integral to the work, and should be considered as
important as the main character, and indeed, can be considered a major
player in the work.
I have a mind like a marshmallow -
unpredictable in the microwave.
