Machines and Accessories Report No. 98-01
Date: April 10, 1998
Subject: Cassette Machines That Are Damaged beyond Repair
Every year, NLS saves thousands of dollars by recovering
circuit boards and other usable parts from Damaged Beyond
Repair (DBR) machines sent to the Phoenix, Arizona,
reclamation center. NLS has practiced this economy measure
for a long time by repairing viable circuit boards and
reusing them. Volunteer groups around the country have
dedicated significant efforts to repairing circuit boards
for reuse. Unfortunately, the reclamation center is not
able to handle machine disposal and recovery for the entire
nation, and as a result more than 30,000 machines are sent
directly to our Landover, Maryland, disposal site annually
without recycling valuable parts.
NLS is asking all repair centers and agencies to help offset
the costs of doing business, thus helping to serve as many
people as possible. We can save over $30 per machine simply
by recovering and reusing the three circuit boards. This
saving goes directly toward providing better training and
supplying the tools and parts needed to fix viable machines.
The recovery is easy and can be done very quickly.
_For states that are currently designated to send DBR
machines to the Phoenix reclamation center:_
-- Pull and keep any parts from the machine that you need.
(Do not reuse any rubber drive parts!)
-- Remove the battery from the machine for reuse or
recycling.
-- Send your machines to the reclamation center in Phoenix,
Arizona.
_For states that are NOT designated to send DBR machines to
the Phoenix reclamation center:_
-- Pull and keep any parts from the machine that you need.
(Do not reuse any rubber drive parts!)
-- Pull all circuit boards from machines.
-- Remove the battery from the machine for reuse or
recycling.
-- Send boards to the EMMC office, NLS for reconditioning
and reuse (bubble wrapped and boxed).
-- Send machines to the Landover, Maryland, facility for
disposal or dispose of them locally.
Regardless of where they are being sent, batteries must be
removed from ALL DBR machines. NLS recycles all batteries
to help preserve our environmental resources.
_Care to help?_
NLS would like to establish enough reclamation centers to
recover usable parts from all DBR machines. If this project
interests your group, please contact Kevin Watson at (202)
707-9298. He will give you the details of setting up and
operating a machine-reclamation center in your area.
NLS is always looking for additional help in repairing
recovered circuit boards. The process is an easy one.
If this activity appeals to you and/or your group would
like to explore this option, please contact Kevin Watson.
He will help you set up a board-repair facility.
