To: NACO libraries
From: Ann Della Porta, LC
NACO libraries will soon receive revised DCM Z1 documentation
(yellow pages). Please note these two changes for NACO SAR
contributors in Z1:
(1) change in number of fields required for SARs for
(2) requirement to give "645 $a t $5 DLC" in all non-phrase
SARs (for BIBCO purposes).
We're asking that all series contributors always include the 645
field given below in records for series and multipart items. The
presence of this field will facilitate the tracing of series in BIBCO
645 a t 5 DLC
Reworded section in DCM Z1 64X:
NACO/BIBCO treatment decisions and LC actions
Before August 1995, NACO participants could omit treatment
fields, give treatment only for the NACO library or only for LC, or give
treatment for both the NACO library and LC. The mechanism for
indicating institutional practice is a subfield 5 containing the USMARC
identification code of the institution (see explanations in specific 64X
fields). It is NACO policy that only one NACO participant's symbol
may be in an SAR.
At point of contribution, SARS created by NACO participants
from August 1995-March 1998 lacked LC treatment decisions.
Beginning in April 1998, NACO participants now include an LC tracing
practice (645 a t 5 DLC) in SARs for series and multipart items to
facilitate the tracing of series in BIBCO records; LC classification and
analysis practices are not predicted by NACO participants. NACO
participants still have the option of including or omitting some or all of
the treatment decisions for the NACO library.
BIBCO participants who input records directly into LC's system
(MUMS) must always indicate LC treatment decisions in SARs but may
omit or include their own treatment fields; LC treatment can be given
on those SARs even though LC does not yet have an item.
LC actions: When an item is received in LC and there is an SAR
for the series or multipart item, check the SAR to determine if LC
treatment is present.
(1) Add any missing LC treatment decisions. See
explanations in the specific 64X fields.
(2) LC treatment decisions as predicted/recorded in the SAR
are not to be reconsidered routinely unless the publication fits the
criteria noted in the sections "Series not needing analysis" and
"Multipart items not needing analysis" found later in these 64X pages.
