As more and more American Memory collections go online, with all the quirks
of primary source cataloging and indexing, explaining what is "searchable"
across the collections is getting more and more complicated.  I've been
working with our production team to get exceptions to searching explained a
little better to American Memory end-users.  (I provided ideas, and some
talented folks on our production staff tightened them up, added some ideas,
gathered some feedback, and created a useful web page.)

The result is a new page, "What American Memory resources are included in
this search?" <http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/mdbnote.html>, which is linked
of the American Memory all collections search page
<http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/mdbquery.html>.

This won't replace the training you're doing with your students and with
other teachers, but it should help, especially when combined with the
information on the American Memory "search tips" page
<http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/searchtp.html> and on the "search
guides" page <http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpedu/access.html> on the
Learning Page.

Please feel free to send in your suggestions for improvements on these
pages or elsewhere.  Judy is still polling for your ideas on the Learning
Page, and Judy or I will be happy to funnel your general American Memory
suggestions to our production team.
