On Tuesday, April 21, 1998, The Department of Energy's (DOE) Office
of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) and the Government
Printing Office (GPO) together unveiled a new information tool that
makes DOE R&D report literature available on the world wide web. The
tool, named the DOE Information Bridge, a reference to the President's
"bridge to the 21st century", officially became available at
http://www.doe.gov/bridge. There are no passwords or other entry
requirements.
The system can be used to access, locate, search, and download
full-text and/or bibliographic information electronically. The new
public web site currently includes the full-text of over 25,000 DOE
research and development reports and their bibliographic records and
abstracts in physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental
cleanup, energy technologies, and other topics. These reports were
contributed by the Scientific and Technical Information Program (STIP)
partners throughout the DOE complex. Dating back to January 1996, the
growing collection has over 1.4 million full-text pages.
This is a major step in the right direction to provide the public easy availability
to Government R&D reports. Comments on the Site are welcome --
