One of our best writers, I think. Genli Ai in THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS
is black, as I recall. Though he is technically an Alien in the sense
of not-Earth, he does seem to represent "us" in the novel. Does that
count? Of course, he isn't culturally African or African American. Like
gender in that book, the issue of race teases the reader with
possibilities.
