God, please just strike me down now and get it over with. That would be
***terrible***.
I'm talking about just what you said...great special effects, all star cast,
etc. It would be massive, but wouldn't it be great? If they did it right, it
would be the movie or series of the decade.

A good movie versions of Hobbit/LOTR would be a huge and very difficult
undertaking, if you were not to have a lot of very disappointed fans.
You would need to follow the story closely, have believable special
effects, and recreate a large number of vivid and distinctive
characters. To do it justice, you would need a series of movies or a
mini series.
Various attempts have been made. There was an animated version of the
first half of LOTR released in the early 80s, and the BBC did a very
good radio play of LOTR, also in the 80s. They had some very good
actors for it, and took their time - a thirteen hour production that
left out only one major episode (Bombadil/Barrow downs). At the
beginning of this year I say a production of "The Hobbit" done with
puppets here ins Sydney which was also very good - in two hours they
covered the full story (a little rushed, but quite comprehensibly), and
did it all with only eight actors.
There _is_ a rumour floating around that Miramax studios are working on
a film version of The Hobbit with Sean Connery as Gandalf, to be shot in
New Zealand, but we'll have to wait and see on that one.
What worries me is that the copyright on The Hobbit will expire in
another couple of years. Could you imagine what Disney would do to it?
Barry.
