The extended version of DUNE was assembled by an MCA television executive
(I've forgotten his name, but I wrote about it years ago in
Cinefantastique). The Herbert connection is only that Herbert saw a longer,
pre-theatrical release of DUNE that he expressed approval of. (Herbert
unfortunately died long before the television version was assembled, but he
was Guest of Honor at Worldcon '84 and asserted that he loved that DUNE
featured much of his dialogue throughout and that its visuals suggested a
fuedal system that he had to spend pages establishing).
