For me, truly frightening movies usually have what I call the
gag-me-out-gross factor, but not always...
Prince of Darkness. (shudder). Some reviewers have called this a bomb, I
tend to disagree. While it doesn't have much violence, I think of this as
a good psychological-horror story. If memory serves, a cylinder containing
Satan is found; scientists probing it have all sorts of horrible things
happen to them. Most of Clive Barker's movies are either silly (The Night
Breed), too damn bloody (the HellRaiser Series), tho' Prince of Illusions
really gave the shakes (even an edited for TV version).
The ultimately frightening movie, tho', has to be From Beyond, loosely
based on H.P. Lovecraft. Here a scientist (with the very musical name of
Praetorius) taps into another dimension with a huge tuning fork and all
sorts of THINGS spill into this dimension. Of course, there's also his
assistant with the engorged pineal gland which sucks out people's brains...
