Network Bulletin No. 98-42
Date: July 10, 1998
Subject: Interlibrary loan
Index term: The ILL search form, BPHI online queries, and
streamlined procedures using e-mail
Recent changes in copyright law and advances in technology
allow network libraries and NLS to streamline procedures.
We are now revising the use of the Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Search Form, 73-135, which had been used for a variety of
purposes.
Subject Search for ILLs
Libraries will continue to use the 73-135 form to request
assistance from the NLS Network Services Section (NSS) in
locating loan sources for titles and/or subjects. These
should be sent directly to NSS, which will report back the
search results to the network library.
Inquiring about NLS Intention to Produce
Libraries that want to record or braille a work locally
should now query the BPHI online file to see whether NLS or
another library intends to produce it. The BPHI file was
recently expanded to include notices from network libraries
that they intend to produce a work. It should be noted that
there may be instances in which, due to unexpected
popularity at a later date, NLS decides to produce a title
that had been recorded by a network library. Libraries that
do not have access to the Internet may send a letter of
inquiry to the Network Services Section, which will report
the results of a BPHI search.
Notifying NLS of Trends in Patron Reading Interests
Libraries that want to alert NLS about trends in patron
interests are now asked to send a typed list or an e-mail
message directly to the NLS, Collection Development Section
(CDS), rather than use the 73-135 form.
Recommending a Specific Author or Title for the National
Collection
Libraries that want to recommend that a specific author or
title be considered for the collection, or that NLS
reissue/rerecord an older work, should send a typed list or
an e-mail message directly to CDS, rather than use the 73-
135. The e-mail address of the Head, Collection Development
Section is <[log in to unmask]>. Please note that although NLS
will be happy to receive lists of trends and
recommendations, it will be unable to provide a response to
every recommendation.
