My understanding of references has been that each reference should be in
full AACR2 form and that each reference has the *potential* of being the
heading (exceptions being the links to pre-AACR2 headings].
The chosen heading will have only one chosen date, based on the rules, and
all the references will have the same dates. In the case you cite below, I
would only use the death date, since the birth date has not been clearly
established one way or the other without addition sources.
Since dates are used as a distinguishing factor, different dates could
conflict with different headings of the same name. I agree that it is not
really spelled out in the rules, rather inferred from a combination of rules.
