I read Rendezvous several years ago. Unfortunately, I can never remember
details of the books I read. Some books I only know I have read because
they're in my library(in the already read section).
But Rendezvous will always stay with me because it triggered my imagination
buttons. (ooh that feels good) I can remember the excitement of discovering
the object, wondering about it and then entering. I felt I was there. And I
spent hours trying to picture myself in a spherical world..the oceans wrapping
around the sky. I kept wondering what it was, who created it. Why?
I don't think it had the slick scientific writing of some of my favorite SF
authors, but I felt transported, and that is what I like. It spurred me on to
read some of the other early Hugo winners (like the Way Station ... wonder-
full). I have an idea that because I grew up in the 50's maybe it doesn't
take as much hi-tech razzle-dazzle to activate
my enjoyment. And, sometimes you've just got to be in the right frame of mind
to enjoy a particular book. Maybe if you read it again someday you will enjoy
it more. I hope!
I later read sequels Rama Revealed and the Garden of Rama. Good but no
lasting impression, and Bright Messingers (by Gentry Lee) which is one of the
books I know I read, only because it is sitting in the "been there, read that"
section of my library.
I'm sorry it did nothing for you, but Rendezvous was one of the top ten for
me.
