It's been a while, and I don't have it at hand to check, but I believe that
Avram Davidson's MASTERS OF THE MAZE might have some Knights Templar
connections for your delectation (there's definitely a secret society that
might or might not have connections to the KT). Of course, almost anything by
Davidson might touch on that eventually unlucky corporation. Other probables
include Poul Anderson, R. A. Lafferty, and Harry Harrison, but I don't have
suggested titles at hand.
It has struck me that admirers of Umberto E. and E. L. Doctorow's THE WATER
WORKS (as well as the irritating T. C. Boyle's precious contributions to this
mode) will probably never hear of Davidson, much less read him. Or Lafferty.
Or a number of other writers of literary ambition in sf and fantasy...but this
brings us back to the original post, eh?
