LOTR is NOT a trilogy--it is one book in three parts--Allen & Unwin
insisted on this because of production costs when the book was first
published. Strictly speaking the only format presently in print which can
be said to have Tolkien's original intention in mind is the red volume
(gift) in the slipcase (most stores do not carry it, and it IS expensive).
BTW, I don't mind the form of trilogies, I just resent it when authors
use the form and fail.
