SCARAMOUCHE is one of my all-time most enjoyable movies. The composer was
Victor Young. However, Williams was obviously influenced by Holst's The
Planets, lots of Wagner shows up semi-quoted here and there, and listen to
Max Steiner's theme of KING'S ROW and you'll notice a lot of similarities
to the STAR WARS theme.
I do recall a composer who insisted that his song was recorded on
the moon (called "Walking on the Moon.") For a time, I favored synthesizer
music, but one of my all-time favorite SF pieces is Bernard Herrmann's
incredible soundtrack for DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (nothing like harps to
suggest wondrous vastness backed by some nice bass).
