No bet. I learned a long time ago never to overestimate the taste of
the movie-going public. But if it's a hit, it'll have to be up there
in the INDIANA JONES range, financially. The movie cost over $100 million
to make, and the advertising budget was -also- over $100 million.
The rule of thumb is that a film has to make three times its cost
to break even (why? because not all the box office revenues go to the
production company; the theaters want a little something for showing
it too). It is possible, of course, that a film so universally loathed
by every critic of note can go out and gross three-quarters of a
billion dollars, but it seems unlikely.
