Network Bulletin No. 98-49
Date: August 28, 1998
Subject: Machines (NLS playback equipment)
Index term: CBM identification labels
To help increase the return rate for cassette book machines
(CBMs) when they are no longer being used by patrons, NLS
will supply personalized CBM identification labels to
interested machine-lending agencies (MLAs). We have
selected a label stock used by a Telephone Pioneer group
that is easy to apply, adheres well to CBMs, and has proven
extremely durable.
NLS will provide each MLA that requests it with sufficient
stock to label three years supply of new and returned
machines. Every three years, NLS will distribute new labels
to participating MLAs. Any MLA whose address or telephone
number changes in intervening years may obtain replacement
labels directly from the label manufacturer.
In discussions with chairpersons of the four regional
conferences, it was decided that it would be most practical
to:
1. List only MLAs on the labels. In states where
sublending agencies (SLAs) exist, machines move among SLAs
so frequently that it will be more efficient to provide a
single point of contact for all machines.
2. List the MLA's name and telephone number(s) but omit
the MLA's mailing address in states where SLAs exist. This
will prevent SLA-inventoried machines from being shipped to
the MLA. The MLA will supply the address of the appropriate
SLA to anyone who calls the number(s) on the label.
3. In areas where no SLAs exist, list both the MLA's
address and telephone number(s).
The labels will be 2" x 4", printed in black fourteen-point
type on a brushed silver foil background, and formatted as
shown below.
