Digitizing Collections: A Practical Approach
1998 October 8-9
9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Course Description:
This two-day workshop will present a pragmatic approach to digital
conversion projects, whether focused on preserving collection content,
improving accessibility to a collection, or both. Topics include
assessment of needs and opportunities for digitization including
institutional partnerships, project planning considerations,
allocation and development of human and technological resources,
budgeting and funding sources, implementation and maintenance of the
content development process, and outcome assessment. Case studies,
hands-on demonstrations, and interactive discussion will be
integrated with presentation of theoretical and practical issues and concepts.
Exit Competencies:
Understanding of digitization concepts, technologies, and theory
Understanding of digitization needs and opportunities for your
institution
Ability to select appropriate materials to be digitized
Ability to determine access methods and presentation style
Understanding of allocation of resources for initial
implementation and ongoing maintenance of the project
Understanding of marketing the project, procurement of funding,
and measurement of outcomes
Understanding of the content development process and selection of
digitization tools
About the Instructors:
John McGinty is currently the Library Director at Marist College, which,
due to its working relationship with the FDR Presidential Library, was
instrumental in implementing the digital preservation of the contents in the FDR
Library. Throughout his library career, Mr. McGinty has specialized in
the adaptation, development, and integration of computerized services
and resources into library workflow. For the past three years, he has
been working on a large-scale digital library project in
collaboration with IBM and several research institutions nationwide,
including the Library of Congress. Mr. McGinty holds an masters in
Library Science from Rutgers University and an MBA from the
University of Connecticut.
James E. Rush is Executive Director of PALINET, a multi-state,
multi-type library cooperative serving libraries and information
centers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey,
New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. A chemist by training, Dr.
Rush has over 30 years of experience in all facets of
library and information science, and has worked extensively with modern
technologies for digitization of materials, including United Nations
documents, library board meeting minutes, church records, archive
finding aids, monograph tables of contents, genealogical materials,
books and photographs. His primary interest in
digitization is to improve access to the wealth of information resources
resident in libraries and other repositories, although preservation of
these resources is also an important interest.
Maureen Kimball, Special Programs & Services Coordinator at PALINET,
plans and implements special projects in library automation that include
digital conversion of documents, images, and artifacts. Her systems experience
includes application design, project management, consultation, and
educational program development for educational institutions,
healthcare organizations, businesses, and libraries. Ms. Kimball holds a BA in Mathematics from
Georgian Court College and both a masters in Information Systems and
a masters in Library and Information Science from Drexel University.
